(Pandinus imperator)

Classification: Athropods, Arachnids

AKA: Imperial scorpion

Origin: Tropical Africa

Active time: Nocturnal

Adult Size: including tail: 7-8 inches (female), up to 6 inches (male). Will molt several times until mature

Lifespan: up to 10 years

Substrate: Reptile bark, Eco Earth and moss (they like to dig)

Temp: (cool side) 70 F, (hot side) 80-85 F

Humidity: High, 75%-85%

Setup: -lights are not necessary (although using black light at night won't bother them because they can't see it, and it makes them light up)

-Under Tank Heat pad can be used to create hot side temp

-Shallow water dish for drinking

-Aquariums work well: Minimum 5-10 gallons for one, 20+ gallons for a group, floor space is more important than any other dimension, but you don't want it to be too big b/c they may have trouble catching their food

-reliable humidity gauge and thermometer

Feeding: Carnivorous. Crickets, mealworms, superworms, occassional pinkie mouse.

Feed 2-3 times weekly. Dust with Calcium powder (available in reptile section) once per week.

Temperament: not exactly cuddly pets, but fun to watch. Generally reluctant to sting. "High strung", easily stressed out which can affect health, the less you handle it the better. Opposite genders will fight with each other (mating behavior). Can be kept in same-sex groups as long as they have enough space.

Handling: In a calm, quiet area, coax the scorpion into your open hand. Hold over a soft surface in case it falls. Try to avoid grabbing the tail.

Danger level: not as dangerous as you'd think. They'd rather pinch than sting, which usually doesn't hurt much. If stung, may cause swelling/bee sting type injury. Some people can have allergies just like with bees. Picking up some cheap gardening gloves is usually a good idea if you're nervous about being stung.
